5 Tips for Professional Headshots in Vienna: How to Prepare

Preparing for a professional headshot? Expert tips from Vienna photographer Christian Ariel Heredia on wardrobe, color theory for skin tones, and preparation for an authentic portrait.
We’ve all been there. You know you need a professional photo for your LinkedIn, your website, or a press release, but the very thought of standing in front of a lens makes you want to cancel the appointment.

I’ve been a photographer for over 25 years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: Almost everyone starts a session by telling me they aren't photogenic. My job isn't just to "take a photo"—it's to guide you through a process where you feel comfortable, authentic, and seen. To help you get ready for your close-up, here is the perfect recipe for preparing for a professional headshot session in Vienna.
1. Wardrobe: Authenticity Over Novelty

The golden rule for wardrobe is simple: Comfort translates to confidence. You don’t need to rush out and buy a brand-new outfit. In fact, I recommend wearing something you already know and love—something that makes you feel like the best version of yourself.
Colors & Skin Tone: Choose colors that complement your natural skin tone. A good rule of thumb is to avoid colors that might exaggerate certain undertones; for example, if your skin tends to show redness or flushes easily, it’s best to avoid wearing a red top, as it will emphasize those tones in the camera. Instead, aim for solid, mid-tone colors (blues, greens, grays) which generally draw attention to your face rather than your outfit.
Fit & Patterns: Ensure your clothes are well-tailored. Cameras pick up loose fabric or tight buttons more than the human eye does. Stay away from strong patterns, visible logos, or distracting jewelry. Specifically, avoid tiny stripes, which can create a "wavy" visual distraction (called a moiré effect) on digital screens.
The "Vibe": Whether you are a creative entrepreneur or a corporate executive, your outfit should reflect your industry. However, don't feel like you have to wear a suit if you never wear one in real life. Authenticity is key.
The Secret is in the Shoes: Even if they aren't in the frame, wear shoes that are comfortable and give you a sense of a confident stance. How you stand on your feet changes how you carry your shoulders and head.
2. Preparation: The "Natural Retouch"

The best editing in the world can’t replicate the glow of a well-rested face. Think of the 48 hours before your shoot as your "internal" preparation.
Hydration & Rest: Drink plenty of water in the two days leading up to the shoot to help your skin look clearer and your eyes brighter. Aim for a full night’s sleep; exhaustion is difficult to "fix" in post-production without making a photo look over-processed.
Skin Care Routine: Cleanse your skin and gently remove any dry skin at least a night before the session to give your face time to settle. While hydration is great, please avoid adding oily substances or heavy serums right before the session, as these can create unwanted "hot spots" under studio lights.

3. Consider the "Vienna Backdrop"
One of the perks of being a portrait photographer in Vienna is the incredible variety of environments at our doorstep.
The Studio: Perfect for a clean, classic, and focused look where the attention is 100% on you.
On-Location: If your brand is more dynamic, we can use the architecture of Vienna—from the modern lines of the DC Towers to the timeless elegance of the First District—to give your portrait context and personality.

4. It’s All About the "Micro-Expressions"
You don't need to practice a "fake smile" in the mirror. During our session, I will coach you through small adjustments—a slight tilt of the head, a shift in weight, or a thought that brings a genuine sparkle to your eyes. We are looking for those split-second moments where your personality truly shines through. Some great examples here.
5. Trust the Collaborative Process
A great headshot is a dialogue. We’ll look at the shots together as we go, making adjustments to the lighting or your pose until we find the "Hero Shot" that makes you say, "Wow, that’s actually me." My goal is to provide you with a visual tool that helps you reach your next big professional milestone.
Ready to update your professional image? Whether you need a classic corporate portrait or a creative branding session, I’m here to make the process seamless and—dare I say—enjoyable.
